”Some Enchanted Evening” is a song full of memories for him. He sang it at Carnegie Hall in New York in 1996, wearing the traditional Japanese attire of a “haori” and “hakama” pants. He told about his memories to the audience.

For an encore, Dr.Handa walked among the audience while singing “When Saints Go Marching In,” “Danny Boy,” “O Sole Mio,” and “Tennessee Waltz.”

On Jan.15,the the Tokyo Art Foundation (TAF) held a charity concert titled “New Year’s Solo Jazz Extravaganza!” at Nakano Sunplaza in Nakano Ward in Tokyo.  It featured a solo performance by Dr.Haruhisa Handa, chairman of TAF. All proceeds will be donated to the Lesotho-based charity Sentebale, which promotes efforts to eradicate AIDS.

Dr.Handa sang 26 songs, including popular jazz standards such as “Take the ‘A’ Train.”, “It’s Only a Paper Moon”, “Fly me to the Moon”, “What a Wonderful World”. He also sang some jazzily arranged anime theme songs.

As is often the case with his style of performance, he engaged in some casual, comic banter with the audience between songs.

He said, “When you listen to jazz, don’t be too serious. Just relax and enjoy the music no matter how you like…”

The Third Global Opinion Leaders Summit (4)

Blair’s speech was followed by a panel discussion. Along with the above three ex-leaders and Dr.Handa, former Minister of Foreign Affairs Masahiko Komura, Kenichi Ito, President of The Japan Forun on International Relations, Hiroshi Hirabayashi, President of the Council on East Asian Community, Kurt Campbell, former Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Ralph Cossa, Pacific Forum Center for Strategic and International Studies President (CSIS), Irish Ambassador to Denmark Brendan Scannell and Hisham Badr, Assistant Foreign Minister for International Institutions and Organizations of Egypt, joined the discussion.

In the discussion, Komura claimed the importance of collective self-defense. This was in response to what Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s administration decided on July 1. The decision was to the effect that the government could exercise collective self-defense by altering its interpretation of the Constitution’s Article 9, which renounces war forever. This changeover means Japan can now defend its allies even if Japan itself is not under attack.

The summit was attended by 1,800 audience, including members of the Young Leaders Program of Pacific Forum CSIS, based in Honolulu.

The Third Global Opinion Leaders Summit (3)

After an intermission, the second half of the summit began with Blair’s speech. He said, “There are many characteristics of globalization. The most obvious one is that globalization makes the world interdependent…When the U.S. Federal Reserve talks about quantitative easing, the global market reacts. The reaction to the Ebola outbreak must also be global.”

He then expressed concern over terrorism by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and the Ukrainian conflict. In order to solve these disputes, he stressed the importance of the education of young people.

He also said, “Developed countries and their allies should also stay strong in tackling international terrorism. In this sense, it is important for EU to get back on its feet.” He seemingly referred to economic weakness and conflict surrounding Russia over the Ukrainian situation.

The Third Global Opinion Leaders Summit (2)

After Dr.Handa’s speech, John Howard spoke further on globalization. He stressed that globalization has helped to reduce world poverty, saying “The study of the last 30 years shows globalization is not the enemy, but a friend to the poor.” He also said preserving a good relationship with Asian countries like Indonesia, Japan, is geopolitically very important for Australia.

In response to Howard’s speech, Tony Blair, now deeply engaged in peacekeeping in the Middle East as the Quartet (the U.S., Russia, EU and the U.N.) Representative, said, “I agree that globalization is an unstoppable force.” He claimed that to cope with globalization, all countries educate people to prepare for it, and that we should recognize the fact that the countries all over the world have achieved economic success through free trade. Then, asked about terrorism by Dr.Handa, Blair pointed out that people need to understand that they have differences and be taught that everyone should be treated equally, regardless of those differences.

Then, Fidel Valdez Ramos expressed his agreement on their thoughts, saying, ”Peace and development must be the outcome of globalization.” He also pointed out that the world must work together to cope with Ebola, international terrorism, climate change and poverty.

On the environmental issue, Howard stressed that environmental friendliness and economic development don’t stand side by side, giving an example of nuclear power which is necessary to solve world energy problems.

The Third Global Opinion Leaders Summit (1)

On Oct.17, 2014, Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, former Australian Prime Minister John Howard and former Philippine President Fidel Valdez Ramos joined Dr. Haruhisa Handa, the chairman of Worldwide Support for Development (WSD), to discuss globalization and world peace at a symposium in Tokyo.

The WSD hosted the Third Global Opinion Leaders Summit, titled “The Opportunities and Challenges of Globalization and geopolitical Issues of the Day”, held at the Tokyo Prince Hotel. Other speakers, including former Minister of Foreign Affairs Masahiko Komura, joined the summit.

In his opening speech, Dr.Handa, who served as emcee and panel moderator, touched upon the nature of globalization over the past few decades. He said that economically, trade volume has surged and multinational companies not only sell the mass-produced products with the same quality to many countries, but also customize their products and services to each country, and that politically, global leaders aim to maintain a balance between globalism and nationalism…

X'mas Charity Pro Wrestling Dinner Show (3)

After the matches, the wrestlers visited guest tables with a bag of Christmas goodies, giving out a small bag of snacks to each guest.

Kaneko Koizumi, one of the guests, said, “I’ve never seen pro wrestling live. The sound (of a wrestler chopping the chest of his opponent and slamming another fighter’s body onto the mat) was quite loud, making for an exciting experience. The Tiger Mask song was also very impressive.”

The dinner show was hosted by TAF, co-sponsored by the Worldwide Support for Development (WSD) with support from the International Sports Promotion Society (ISPS). Dr.Handa is the chairman of both WSD and ISPS.

The proceeds will go to various Sentebale programs, including the one for eradicating HIV.

I personally hope that, someday,  Pro Wrestling Illustrated,  one of the famous pro wrestling magazines in America, will cover an unique charity pro wrestling show like this hosted by Dr.Handa,
and that someday, WWF wrestlers in America will join his charity activity and save HIV carriers and orphans in Lesotho.
