On Jan.15,the the Tokyo Art Foundation (TAF)
held a charity concert titled “New Year’s Solo Jazz Extravaganza!” at Nakano
Sunplaza in Nakano Ward in Tokyo. It
featured a solo performance by Dr.Haruhisa Handa, chairman of TAF. The concert
was held with the support of the Worldwide Support for Development (WSD), a
nonprofit organization Dr.Handa also chairs. All proceeds will be donated to
the Lesotho-based charity Sentebale, which promotes efforts to eradicate AIDS.
Dr.Handa sang 26 songs, including popular jazz standards such as “Take
the ‘A’ Train.”, “It’s Only a Paper Moon”, “Fly me to the Moon”, “What a
Wonderful World”. He also sang some jazzily arranged anime theme songs.
As is
often the case with his style of performance, he engaged in some casual, comic
banter with the audience between songs.
He said, “When you listen to jazz, don’t be
too serious. Just relax and enjoy the music no matter how you like…”
